Well, Halloween came, and it went…and was good while it lasted. Today she took away all my little forest friends, fairy lights and tree branches. Not to say that I blame her. Although she wore a flower crown with horns, she really is defenseless against some of those who stalk her. It’s very clear- cut in the wild. All of us know who might attack and devour whom. But those of her kind prey in a different manner…sometimes blatantly… but some are less obvious, sneaking and slithering before they pounce.
There was one of that description on Saturday night. She was sitting there at the bar, in conversation with a decent-seeming male, and then the other one comes prowling. I’ll call him “Ramo”. He walked back and forth in front of her and the other him….Sat down beside her companion and peered around him (like the man was a tree trunk) to watch her. She continued her conversation intently, pretending not to notice. Then the first male left, and Ramo scooted into the chair beside her as the band stopped playing. “I was just going to ask you to dance”, said Ramo. She thanked him and was probably thanking her lucky stars that the music had ended. On and on he chatted her up…asking her why he hadn’t seen her before….asking her to go somewhere else with him…telling her how beautiful she looked. She should grow her claws longer and sharpen them and her teeth, too and maybe he would temper his approach. Although she was gracious and polite, I could sense her recoil from my perch. But then, in his inebriated state, he made a maneuver that changed things. Ramo told her , ” just say shoo, shoo if you want me to go” and flicked the fingers of one hand…then two. “Shoo, shoo”, she said, flicking her hand, and laughed. “Shoo, shoo”, he said. “Shoo, shoo”. Together they shoo, shooed until finally at two am she, and Sarah, the bartender, shoo, shooed Ramo out the door. Of course, ten minutes later, he came back in and she asked him what in the world he was doing. And then she shoo, shoo, shoo, shoo, shoo, shoo, shoo, shooed him out into the night and all was well once again in our domain.
